The Magic of Safe Staycations

First things first sisterhood...we have a responsibility to look after ourselves and our families. It’s been a tough year, no one can deny that. However, staying safe and taking responsibility for yourself and your family. Conspiracy theories abound and if I am honest, we all feel like we have had enough. I believe that erring on the side of caution during this period will stand you in better stead.

There is no other period in which taking up the reigns to be responsible for our own health and safety has been more crucial; there is a direct impact on our immediate communities and that should be enough inspiration for us to ensure that whatever activities we pursue this festive season, we do so responsibly.

Having said, I know that many of us need the break...a break from what has probably felt like a few years in just a single year. While we take responsibility for our safety, it is also up to us to take responsibility for our perspective. If your office is shutting down, trust me, getting that downtime, even if you’re not travelling will make a world of difference and you will get the rest your mind and body needs. Interestingly, when I actually looked up the word “downtime,” the definition refers to when production stops or “periods when a system is unavailable, especially when making repairs.”

I know that mentally, emotionally and relationally, we need the repair time. This is the maintenance time you need so that when you’re operating once more, you’re doing so better than before. A large number of us will be staycationing this year and it will be what you make it out to be...so make it restful and make it fun. These are definitely some ideas that I will be getting stuck into.

*Disclaimer: Please take note of regional COVID-19 restrictions concerning the various public spaces operation regulations.

Hikes / Outdoor Activities

All protocols observed, of course, this is a stunning option. South Africa is a beautiful country with numerous hiking trail and park options. My recommendation would be to call to book in advance due to trails and parks limiting numbers.

National Gardens and Nature Reserves

One of the most grounding experiences that is just so good for your mind, body and soul is a trip to the national gardens nature reserves. Leave the tech and gadgets behind and take a trip with your friends and family. You will find yourself doing so a few times over.

Day Trips

Most of us may not be travelling very far, but who says you need to travel for thousands of kilometres? A change of scenery could be a 20-60 minute drive away. Explore the region around you and take advantage of those hidden gems. Gautengers, head out to Haartees or the Vaal

Open-air Christmas markets

Once again, we reiterate to adhere to all protocols and restrictions. There are a tonne of open air markets at this time of year. Make your trips short but sweet to avoid overcrowding. Menlyn has just opened their Sky Market.

City sightseeing

The famous red busses will take you to great historical sites around your city. Enjoy the time not driving to think, explore and get to know your city far better.

Theme Parks

For those of us in the City of Gold, Gold Reef City Theme Park or “A-Maize-Ing” or  is a must. A number of Nurseries have rides for toddlers and tweens. Ensure the places you’re visiting are adhering to healthy and safety protocols when it comes to cleaning their equipment.

Open-Air Theatres

The arts has kept us going online over the past few months. You’ll be delighted to know that a number of small theatres and arts companies are hosting productions in parks. Supporting them not only gives you sensational entertainment, but it supports the local arts industry too.

National Museums, Historical spaces and Art Galleries

Ok, this is one of my favourite activities personally. Museums carry so much in the atmosphere, that it moves you. Take a trip to the museum, art galleries or historical spaces of interest like The Cradle of Human Kind. You’ll be glad you did.

A haven of fairy lights

While a number of us remember the official turning on of the Christmas lights in our various City Centres, these beautiful feel good spaces have adapted somewhat. Parks and very large lifestyle spaces (like Melrose Arch and Monte Casino) now have their own outdoor “walk of lights.” Become a child once more and enjoy the beautiful lights with your children.

The Magic of Home

While many of us want to get out, the reality right now is that we need to play it safe. If spaces are too full, don’t take chances. There are ways to create magic at home. Indoor picnics, reading great books, Netflix, Showmax and small gatherings must be embraced right now.

Sisterhood, there are so many things you ladies do exceptionally, staying safe is our priority. It’s our responsibility to look after our health and we have an obligation to those around us to keep them safe too. We are intricately connected, every single one of us...so have fun, create the magic and enjoy a safe staycation.
