Community, Care, and Compassion: Unveiling the Essence of Motherhood Conversations with Atang

With immense admiration for Botstsi, Atang eagerly anticipated the arrival of her little girl, envisioning her mother by her side, imparting wisdom and nurturing their bond. Yet, the unexpected lockdown and the absence of a supportive community made Atang realise the newfound significance of time and companionship in her journey of motherhood.

"Lockdown without my mother was undeniably challenging. The little things that only a mother could do would have made all the difference—those moments where only a mother's presence could soothe my soul is what I yearned for," Atang confessed, expressing gratitude for her husband's efforts while acknowledging the gaps that only her mother could fill. The craving for her mother's food and her uniquely tender touch became profound.

Despite mourning the absence of a traditional baby shower and her mother's physical presence, Atang found solace in the silver linings of the lockdown experience. She discovered a deepened bond with her husband as they grew together as parents, and they had the opportunity to get to know their precious baby truly. A poignant reminder emerged: when a new baby is born, a new mother is also born, and she requires love and care. As Atang and Kim shared in heartfelt conversations, the true essence of having a mother around lay in the vulnerability and safety it provided—an unwavering love that transcended all.

Preserving the spirit of Ubuntu as South Africans become paramount, Atang realised. Inspired by her transformative journey, Atang embarked on a new path, determined to become a Doula. She recognised the invaluable support and solace that a woman who has experienced childbirth can bring to expectant mothers. It became clear to her that her purpose in this world would undergo a profound shift upon becoming a mother herself. A simple question posed by her friend Thabi, yes, our very own LDH Thabi, propelled her to pursue her calling as a Doula.

As our conversation with Atang draws to a close, she sheds light on the significance of understanding the dynamics among girlfriends during the transition to motherhood. Friendships evolve, she asserts, and positive dynamics manifest when friends demonstrate empathy towards new mothers, and new mothers reciprocate with love and understanding.

Atang's journey embodies the power of community and the transformative impact of shared experiences. It highlights the importance of cherishing time, embracing the spirit of Ubuntu, and nurturing the bonds that sustain us through life's most profound transitions.
